If you have seen conversations online about a miracle hormone free treatment for menopause hot flushes, they are likely referring to Veozah (also known as fezolinetant).
Veozah is a new non hormonal prescription tablet designed to reduce hot flushes and night sweats in menopause. Unlike HRT, it does not contain oestrogen. Instead, it works on the brain’s temperature control system to help reduce the intensity and frequency of hot flushes.
For some women, it has been described as life changing especially for those who cannot take HRT or prefer not to use hormones. But miracle is probably an overstatement. While studies show it can significantly reduce symptoms, it does not work for everyone, and it does not treat other menopause effects such as bone or cardiovascular changes.
Is Veozah available on the NHS
Yes, Veozah is now available on the NHS in the UK for eligible women.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has approved fezolinetant as an option for treating moderate to severe menopause related hot flushes when HRT is not suitable or cannot be used.
This means:
- It can be prescribed on the NHS
- It is generally considered a second line option after HRT
- It is mainly for women whose symptoms are significantly affecting daily life
Why all the online confusion?
Much of the confusion comes from timing and access. Veozah was only recently approved for NHS use in England and before that it was mainly discussed as a private prescription option, which led to mixed information online.
There has also been discussion around safety monitoring, particularly rare liver related side effects, which is why some women will need regular blood tests while taking it. Importantly, there is no evidence linking Veozah to cancer.
The bottom line
Veozah is not a miracle cure, but it is an important new option. For the right person, it can significantly reduce hot flushes and improve sleep and quality of life, especially when HRT is not suitable.
As always, the best approach is an individual one, weighing up symptoms, medical history, and personal preference with a healthcare professional.
